Fixed Orthodontic Retainers
A bonded retainer is a very thin piece of wire that is attached to the back of the teeth. It won't be visible when he smiles, though he will be able to feel it with his tongue — a sensation that takes a little getting used to. But once he does get accustomed to it, he will probably forget it's even there.
The advantage of a bonded retainer is that compliance is not an issue: There is no doubt your son will wear it because it can't be taken out. Also, as mentioned before, there is no cosmetic issue because it is hidden behind his teeth.
The non-removable kind is bonded to the back of the teeth with a dental composite material that is hardened with a special curing light, and is very strong. Only a dentist can remove this type of retainer.
Sometimes a bonded retainer will be recommended in situations where there is a significant potential for the teeth to move back out of alignment: when a gap between the front teeth has been closed, for example.
Removable Orthodontic Retainers
Once your dentist has finished straightening your teeth, the retention phase of your treatment will need to begin.
During this phase (which at least in theory may last the remainder of your life), you will be required to wear some type of dental retainers. This is true no matter what kind of braces or orthodontic system was used.
Without proper retention, orthodontic relapse (the return of features of your original malocclusion) is likely to occur.
Essix style orthodontic appliances are also sometimes referred to as "invisible" retainers because they're made using clear plastic. They may also be referred to as "overlay" retainers because they fully cover over the teeth (and even some of the surrounding gum tissue).
An Essix orthodontic retainer.
A vacuum-formed orthodontic retainer.
An impression of the patient's teeth is taken and transformed into a plaster cast.
A thin sheet of plastic (around 0.030 inch, which is on the order of thickness as a credit card) is then heated and using a vacuum unit is sucked down over the cast (thus creating the needed shape for the retainer).
The excess plastic is trimmed away. The finished appliance may cover all of the patient's teeth on the arch (upper or lower jaw) or else just some grouping of them.
These retainers look very similar to Invisalign® aligners. But instead of being changed every few weeks, they are worn indefinitely (per your dentist's instructions).
For Invisalign® patients, the use of Essix retainers may seem the logical choice since they are already familiar with wearing this type of appliance. And in fact, Align Technology, Inc. (the maker of the Invisalign® system), manufactures its own version of the Essix appliance called Vivera® retainers.,/
Six Months Smiles and Quick Straight Teeth
1. Six Months Smiles – is a brace system, which focuses on cosmetically aligning your front teeth (the ones you show when you talk and smile). Unlike with traditional metal braces, with Six Months Smiles treatment all the components of your brace will be either clear or white, making it look a lot less obvious.
- The main advantage of this system is that the final result can be achieved quite quickly (within approximately six months, hence the name).
- The disadvantages are such that since the brace is permanently bonded onto your teeth, brushing and eating becomes difficult. You will have to avoid hard and chewy foods for the whole duration of your treatment. Food may also get trapped in between your teeth and the brace, making the teeth cleaning process more of a chore.
You review appointments with the dentist will have to be quite frequent, as your progress would need to be closely monitored. Should you lose or break any components of the brace, an additional appointment will be required for repair works.
This system is normally good for people who are able to accommodate frequent dental appointments into their life.
The price for the Six Months Smiles treatment is set at £1599.00 per arch (£3198.00 for both upper and lower teeth) and includes 2 free dental hygiene sessions (one before and one after the treatment), free removable retainers at the end of the treatment (to ensure your teeth do not move again) and free ZOOM home whitening.

Crooked teeth and misaligned bites can interfere with proper chewing. These problems can make cleaning the teeth more of a challenge, which then increases your risk of cavities, tooth decay and gingivitis. Crooked teeth also make you feel uncomfortable when you smile.

Discreet Orthodontic Treatments
From simple crowding to more complex cases, we have transformed the smiles of hundreds of patients through dental braces in St Johns Wood. If you want to fix your smile, but are less keen on the idea of the traditional track braces, you will be pleased to know that we offer a range of discreet North West London braces and orthodontic treatments, including:
Inman-aligners – This is a removable orthodontic appliance, which aligns the front teeth safely in a matter of weeks (most cases finish in 6 to 18 weeks). Because it is removable, you can take it out to fit your lifestyle.
Invisible braces (removable) – We offer invisible braces for patients who want a more discreet option than Inman-aligners. Our invisible aligners are custom-built for a tight fit.
Six months smile – This option is ideal for patients who want a holistic teeth straightening treatment in as fast as six months. We use clear brackets and tooth-coloured wires that are barely visible.
We understand that undergoing an orthodontic treatment is a big decision, which is why we offer orthodontic consultations. During your consultation with us, we will discuss the pros and cons of each method of straightening your teeth; we will also discuss how long the treatment will take, what you will look like during the treatment, and the cost of each method.

I had my braces take off today and very happy with the results. Massive thank you to David and the team. Very professional yet a great bit banter between staff which is nice. Premises is spotless so worries about hygiene issues. Will definitely be coming back and would recommend friends and family without a doubt!
